Do you want to renovate your bathroom and wonder if keeping a bathtub still makes sense?

In recent years, showers have become increasingly popular, especially for their practicality and space-saving benefits. In fact, most people no longer hesitate to replace their old bathtub with a shower. Here is how the work is carried out to replace a bathtub with a shower.

Why replace your bathtub with a shower?

Replacing a bathtub with a shower can be a wise decision for several reasons, depending on each person’s needs and preferences. Here are some common advantages to consider:

  1. Accessibility: Walk-in showers are easier to access than bathtubs, making them ideal for the elderly or those with reduced mobility. They reduce the risk of falls and can be equipped with grab bars for added safety.

  2. Space-saving: Showers generally take up less space than a bathtub, which can be particularly advantageous in small bathrooms. This frees up space for other bathroom elements or to expand the storage area.

  3. Water savings: Showers typically use less water than baths. If you are concerned about environmental impact or want to reduce your water bill, switching to a shower can be an interesting option.

  4. Bathroom modernization: A modern shower can give your bathroom a more contemporary look. There are many design, material, and style options to customize your shower according to your aesthetic preferences.

  5. Ease of maintenance: Showers are often easier to clean than bathtubs, as they have fewer horizontal surfaces where water can stagnate or mold can develop.

  6. Versatility: Showers can be equipped with various features, such as massage jets, rain shower systems, integrated seats, etc., to meet your specific needs.

The work to be planned to replace a bathtub with a shower

Removing the old elements:

We start by removing the various elements that make up the old installation. First, we remove the apron made up of vertical panels that cover the bathtub’s surroundings. Then, we unseal the bathtub itself and its fittings: the mixer tap, and in some cases the shower bar and the shower head.

Preparing the walls and floor:

Once the bathtub is removed, the floor and wall must be prepared before installing the shower. The floor must be perfectly flat, so leveling may be required. In the case of a walk-in shower, it may be necessary to dig into the floor to embed the shower tray, and if the installed shower is smaller than the bathtub, floor connections will likely be needed. Another factor to consider is proper water drainage, which is ensured by a minimum slope and can also affect floor preparation.

The part of the wall that was hidden behind the bathtub is probably not tiled: therefore, a wall tile connection will be needed at this location. If you plan to install a shower cabin, it will contain an opaque wall panel that will cover the wall and may partially hide the untiled surface that was behind the bathtub.

Plumbing and electricity:

If necessary, the plumbing will need to be modified or rearranged to connect the new shower to the water supply and wastewater systems. Additionally, plumbing accessories such as faucets, showerheads, and anti-leak devices must be installed.

And if the new shower includes electrical elements, such as lights or ventilation, ensure they are correctly installed by a qualified electrician.

Complete Renovation: Major Works

For a standard shower with a tray, walls, and fixtures, the work will be quite substantial, as described above: leveling the floor, integrating the tray into the floor, adapting the fixtures to the old water inlets and outlets, and finally, matching the wall and floor coverings around the shower. These significant works are particularly feasible if you plan to completely redo your bathroom in addition to replacing the bathtub with a shower.

Installing a Shower Cabin: Simpler Works

To replace your bathtub with a shower without major works, the ideal solution is to install a shower cabin specifically designed for bathtub replacement. It provides easy connections for water supply and drainage, and its dimensions are close to those of a bathtub, which facilitates the work of matching the wall and floor coverings around the shower cabin. This solution offers a simpler and faster installation!

Shower Cabins: Numerous Models and Functions Available

Variety of styles and sizes: Shower cabins are available in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and designs, allowing them to be adapted to different tastes and aesthetic needs. You can choose from corner cabins, rectangular cabins, rounded cabins, etc.

Customization Options: Many shower cabins come with customizable features, such as massage jets, rain shower systems, integrated seats and storage shelves, steam bath functions, or even chromotherapy options.
