Programmable thermostat

Why use a programmable thermostat?

To achieve heating savings without compromising thermal comfort in your home, there are multiple technical solutions. Installing a programmable thermostat is one of them. Both simple and quick to implement, this device allows you to regulate the temperature of your interior as you wish. To learn more, follow the guide!

How does a programmable thermostat work?

Directly connected to your current heating system, the programmable thermostat allows you to regulate the temperature of your home by programming its operation according to the hours of the day.

Unlike a classic heating system without a programmer, this device allows you to manage the temperatures in each room.

The different types of programmable thermostats

  • The programmable room thermostat: it allows you to set the system temperature according to certain time slots that can vary from one day to another. These thermostats can be wired or wireless.

  • The connected programmable thermostat: it offers the possibility to control your heating system remotely via your smartphone or tablet. This facilitates the optimization of non-heated hours and also allows independent control of different zones of the home.

What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?

The main advantage of the programmable thermostat is of course the thermal comfort it provides by allowing you to adjust the temperature of your home according to your wishes. But it is also an ideal technical solution to adapt your energy consumption based on your presence in your home.

The most sophisticated thermostat models indeed have preset programs that optimize the heating system to which they are connected. Moreover, the vast majority of them also allow you to set the temperature of each room with extreme precision (to the tenth of a degree).

3 programmable thermostat options you won't be able to live without

Are you hesitating between several thermostat models? Here is a selection of 3 features that should tip the balance towards a connected programmable thermostat.

1. Heating scheduling

Heating scheduling is one of the main options of programmable thermostats. When you have a connected application, the setting is even easier. From your smartphone, simply select the time slots for which you prefer to lower the boiler power, or on the contrary, increase it. This allows you to gradually heat the rooms before bedtime and lower the temperature when you are away during the day. Scheduling the heating gives you control over your consumption by using energy wisely.

2. Automatic adjustment of heating power

Available on some thermostats the ‘adaptive’ functions take into account the outside temperature as well as the insulation level of your home to regulate the boiler power. Consequently, the thermostat anticipates the heating start-up needs, so you always have a comfortable temperature. Thus, when the outside temperature drops during the night, the programmable thermostat is able to adapt.

3. Alert for better maintenance

A heating system is considered efficient when it provides the necessary heating while maintaining a comfortable temperature, and when it operates perfectly. Indeed, a poorly maintained boiler overconsumes energy and may increase your heating bill. An interesting feature of smart thermostats is that they alert you in case of suspected malfunction or simply if the device’s batteries need to be changed.

Installation of the programmable thermostat: what you need to know

Connect the thermostat to the boiler

It is advisable to contact a professional heating engineer for the installation of the programmable thermostat and to ensure its proper functioning.

The applications, and the functions directly on the device, are generally very accessible. However, connecting the thermostat to your boiler requires technical skills. Even if you can perform this task independently, the intervention of a certified heating engineer  facilitates the operations. You ensure that everything is functional and can ask questions directly to the technician.

Thermostat: where to install the device?

To be most effective, it is advisable to install the thermostat in a frequented and accessible room. You can simply change the settings whenever you need, without any additional constraints.

Do you have a smart thermostat capable of adjusting your boiler’s power by analyzing the room temperature? All the more reason to take the time to choose where to place it. The living room is ideal, as it is a common living area where a lot of time is spent. To avoid disturbing the sensors, it is better to place it at a height (1.50 m from the floor), away from heat sources and drafts.

Do you want a room heated to 20°C? If your thermostat thinks it is 25°C because you placed it too close to your radiator, you might feel cold!

With which types of equipment is it compatible?

Programmable thermostats can be installed on a natural gas or oil boiler, an air-water heat pump, or an electric heating system. Only the operating mode will differ. If you equip your boiler with a programmable thermostat, it will simply adjust the heat output according to the temperature you have set.

To pass the control commands, the connection mode can be wired (pilot wire) or wireless (WiFi, infrared, etc.). For an electric system, the thermostat must be connected to the various convectors via the connection system of your choice: pilot wire, waves, etc.
